CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: VinFast has highlighted an often-overlooked aspect of electric vehicle ownership—the total cost of ownership (TCO), rather than simply the vehicle’s upfront purchase price. As EV technology becomes more accessible, buyers are increasingly looking beyond the showroom price and considering long-term expenses such as fuel, electricity, maintenance and servicing.
For years, the higher initial price of electric vehicles compared with petrol and diesel models has remained one of the biggest barriers to adoption. However, falling battery costs, expanding model choices and growing charging infrastructure are changing the economics of EV ownership. Lower energy and maintenance expenses can offset part of the initial price difference over several years.
VinFast’s analysis points to the importance of presenting these savings in a simple and understandable manner. The company has introduced a web-based TCO calculator that enables potential buyers to compare the estimated long-term costs of EVs and internal-combustion-engine vehicles according to their driving patterns.
The financial advantage can become particularly significant for motorists who travel longer distances every month. Lower energy consumption and fewer moving components can contribute to reduced operating and maintenance costs compared with conventional vehicles.
The larger message is that EV purchasing decisions should not be based exclusively on the ex-showroom price. Consumers need a broader assessment covering purchase cost, financing, charging, energy consumption, maintenance, servicing and resale value.
As electric mobility expands in India, greater awareness of TCO could help consumers make more informed decisions. Making the complete ownership equation visible may ultimately prove as important as improving battery range, charging speed and vehicle technology.
