CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: If a blood test report shows a 25-hydroxy vitamin D level below 20 ng/mL, it should not be ignored. According to the consensus of experts in India, a level below 20 ng/mL is considered vitamin D deficiency, while a level below 10 ng/mL is placed in the category of severe deficiency.

Vitamin D is important for calcium absorption in the body and for bone health. In many people, deficiency may not cause any clear symptoms, but some may experience pain in the bones or muscles, weakness, fatigue and, if it persists for a long time, bone-related problems. Therefore, the condition should not be assessed only on the basis of symptoms.

Treatment depends on the patient’s age, vitamin D level, health condition and other risk factors. In cases of deficiency among adults, the consensus of Indian experts recommends, under medical supervision, cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) 60,000 IU once a week for 12 weeks, after which a maintenance dose may be required.

However, taking high-dose vitamin D without a doctor’s advice is not appropriate. Excessive intake can lead to toxicity and problems such as increased calcium levels. If the report shows a low level, it is better to consult a doctor to decide the appropriate dose and follow-up tests.
