CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Vitamin D plays an important role in the body by helping keep bones and muscles healthy and supporting the absorption of calcium. Its deficiency can sometimes remain without any clear symptoms. However, when the deficiency becomes more pronounced, problems such as persistent fatigue, muscle weakness, pain and bone pain may appear.
According to experts, vitamin D deficiency can particularly cause problems related to bones and muscles. Bone pain in the back, legs or other parts of the body and muscle weakness are among its possible signs. If the deficiency is severe and continues for a long time, adults may develop osteomalacia, a condition in which bones become weak and soft.
In children, severe deficiency can cause rickets, in which bones become weak and do not develop properly. In some cases, muscle cramps or spasms may also occur, especially when calcium levels are also very low along with vitamin D deficiency.
A blood test for 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OH-D) is used to assess vitamin D status. Taking high doses of vitamin D on one’s own based only on symptoms is not advisable, because excessive supplementation can increase calcium levels in the body and affect the kidneys and other organs.
