CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The problem of a dry throat or dry mouth can occur for several reasons. Common causes include dehydration, breathing through the mouth, use of certain medicines and some health conditions. However, deficiencies of some nutrients can also lead to problems related to the mouth and throat.

In particular, a deficiency of vitamin B2, or riboflavin, can cause symptoms linked to the mouth, lips, tongue and throat. These may include throat pain, cracked lips and swelling of the tongue. To help prevent vitamin B2 deficiency, milk and dairy products, eggs, meat, fish, almonds and other nutritious foods can be included in the diet. Most people can get the required vitamins through a balanced and varied diet.

At the same time, if the mouth or throat remains dry for a prolonged period, it is not advisable to assume that the cause is only a vitamin deficiency and start taking supplements. Drinking enough water, avoiding caffeine and smoking, and chewing sugar-free gum when needed may help. If the problem persists for a long time, there is difficulty in swallowing or sores begin to develop in the mouth, a medical examination by a doctor should be sought.
