CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: US-based healthcare and pharmacy company Walgreens is set to establish its first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India in Chennai. Walgreens India Private Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government in the presence of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
The proposed centre will be located at DLF Downtown in Taramani, along Chennai’s Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) GCC corridor. The facility will focus on technology and business services and is expected to create more than 250 high-value jobs during its first year, with further hiring and expansion planned in subsequent years.
The Chennai centre is intended to support Walgreens’ global technology and enterprise business operations. The company’s entry adds another international healthcare and pharmacy major to Chennai’s expanding Global Capability Centre ecosystem.
The development follows Tamil Nadu’s announcement of a Global Capability Centres Corridor and Development Programme, aimed at attracting and supporting new capability centres across key employment corridors in Chennai. The programme includes the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road, Mount-Poonamallee High Road and Rajiv Gandhi Salai corridors.
The State government has said the Walgreens partnership will create high-value employment opportunities and strengthen Chennai’s technology and business-services ecosystem. Officials also expect the centre to expand its operations beyond the initial workforce as the facility develops.
