CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: With changing weather, cough, cold and sore throat become common problems. In most cases, cough is caused by a viral infection, allergy or irritation in the respiratory tract and settles in some time. However, if a cough persists for a long period or is accompanied by certain specific symptoms, it should not be ignored.

According to Dr Vivek Nangia, head of the pulmonology department at Max Hospital, Saket, a persistent cough lasting 3 to 4 weeks may be a sign that investigation is needed. Such a cough may be linked to asthma, lung infection or, in some cases, TB. Blood in sputum along with cough, difficulty in breathing, chest tightness or wheezing are also warning signs.

In addition, medical advice should be sought in cases of persistent fever, excessive sweating at night, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss or extreme fatigue. Immediate medical help is necessary in situations such as sudden breathlessness, chest pain, bluish lips or low oxygen levels.

According to experts, in cases of a long-lasting cough or one whose pattern is changing, it is better to consult a doctor for examination rather than taking medicines on one’s own.
