CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Congress leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has resigned as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president after more than four years in the post, adding a new turn to the party’s internal leadership debate ahead of the 2027 Assembly election. Warring met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and formally submitted his resignation. He later indicated that he believed Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot may have had a role in the decision, while also stating that he had no concrete evidence to support the claim.
The leadership dispute has involved competing positions within the Punjab Congress, particularly between supporters of Warring and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. In July, the Congress retained Warring as state president while assigning Channi responsibility for the campaign committee.
Channi’s supporters subsequently sought a larger organisational role for him. Following Warring’s resignation, several names are being discussed for the state Congress chief’s position, including Vijay Inder Singla, Pargat Singh, Rana KP Singh, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, Charanjit Singh Channi and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa. The party has not formally announced Warring’s successor. The developments come as Congress prepares for the 2027 Punjab Assembly election, with internal coordination and leadership arrangements remaining key issues for the state unit.
