CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. Discussion has intensified in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over Team India’s new chief selector. Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has applied for the vacant position in the national men’s selection committee. His move has made the selector appointment process more interesting. Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha is currently handling the responsibility of interim chief selector.

The post fell vacant after former chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s tenure ended on October 4, 2026. The BCCI then invited applications to fill one position in the selection committee. Jaffer confirmed that he had applied, saying he had put forward his candidature for the post. The 48-year-old Wasim Jaffer has played 31 Test matches for India. In Test cricket, he has nearly 2,000 runs and five centuries to his name. He also has an outstanding record in domestic cricket. His name is prominently counted among the highest run-scorers in the Ranji Trophy.

Pragyan Ojha is also a key name in the race. Ojha is a former left-arm spinner for India and has played 24 Test matches for the country. After Agarkar’s tenure ended, he was given interim charge of the selection committee. According to reports, the BCCI may consider retaining him as chief selector. Who gets the responsibility of heading the selection committee will depend on the appointment of the new member and the board’s final decision. Changes in the committee’s structure are possible on the basis of rules and seniority. For now, the cricketing world is watching the BCCI’s announcement closely amid Ojha’s role and Jaffer’s candidature.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel’s name was also in discussion for the post. However, according to reports, he did not apply by the stipulated deadline. After that, the names of other former cricketers began to emerge in the race for the selector’s post. The BCCI selection committee takes key decisions related to the selection of players for the Indian men’s team, assessment of domestic and international performances, and future team strategy. In this context, the appointment of a new chief selector is being seen as important for preparations for upcoming international tours and future tournaments. For now, the final decision between Wasim Jaffer’s application and Pragyan Ojha’s interim role will emerge after the process of the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee.
