CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The debate over Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket has intensified once again. Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has said Kohli may have been upset with the way developments linked to his retirement were handled. Jaffer’s remarks have triggered a fresh discussion in Indian cricket over the selection process and the treatment of senior players.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Wasim Jaffer said a major player like Virat Kohli could have continued playing Test cricket for some more time. He said Kohli was preparing for the England tour and that his case could have been handled better. However, Jaffer also made it clear that the full situation cannot be known until Kohli himself reveals the real reason behind his retirement.
Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, 2025. In his 14-year Test career, he played 123 matches and scored 9,230 runs. He also made 30 centuries during this period. Before Kohli’s retirement, Rohit Sharma had also bid farewell to Test cricket on May 7, 2025.
Discussing selection-related decisions, Jaffer said some major decisions in Indian cricket could have been handled in a better and more diplomatic manner. He praised India’s performance in limited-overs cricket but refrained from directly holding the selectors responsible for the team’s performance in Test cricket. For now, no fresh response has come from Kohli to Jaffer’s statement.
