CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The dispute over Other Backward Classes (OBC) certificates issued in West Bengal during 2025-26 has now reached the Supreme Court. On Thursday, the Supreme Court sought a response from the West Bengal government on petitions challenging a Calcutta High Court ruling that had declared OBC certificates issued during certain periods invalid.

A bench of Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana heard the matter and issued notices to the parties concerned. The Supreme Court refused to stay the West Bengal Police constable recruitment process, but made it clear that appointments would be subject to the final decision in the case. The court also directed that this be mentioned in the appointment letters.

The matter is linked to the Calcutta High Court’s judgment of August 12, 2026. The High Court had held invalid the OBC classification made on the basis of government notifications issued in May-June 2025. Following this, the related OBC certificates issued between May 8 and June 12, 2025, and between June 10, 2025, and May 18, 2026, were also treated as ineffective and invalid from the outset.

The Supreme Court will now decide whether the High Court’s ruling should be upheld or modified. Since a final verdict has not yet been delivered, the validity of the certificates concerned will depend on the Supreme Court’s decision.
