CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Kolkata. The West Bengal government is set to conduct a comprehensive survey of government-owned land across the state. According to the government, the objective of the survey is to determine the actual boundaries of government land, identify encroachments on it and reclaim land under occupation.

The West Bengal Directorate of Land Records and Surveys, which functions under the Land and Land Revenue Department, will take the process forward. According to officials, a large amount of land is recorded in government records in the name of the state, but the actual possession status of land at many places is not clear. Some parcels of land had been lying vacant for a long time, and reports have been received of encroachment over time at private or institutional levels.

The government has also planned to take possession of land identified as encroached and install permanent pillars along boundaries to prevent fresh occupation in the future. The process of selecting an expert agency for the survey has begun. Modern satellite-based technology will be used for the exercise.

Under the state government’s new land policy, there is also a plan to attract major investment. According to officials, adequate land will be required for industrial and other large investments, making it important to ensure accurate records and availability of government land. The entire survey process has been targeted for completion in about six months.
