New Delhi: Violations of traffic rules remain a continuing challenge in Delhi. A report released on traffic police action mentions that 6.24 lakh challans were issued in the western range. Concern has also been expressed over disregard for traffic rules in Old Delhi and areas across the Yamuna. However, clear details of the period covered by this figure and the categories of violations are not available.
Traffic police enforcement in Delhi is carried out across six major ranges – north, south, east, west, central and New Delhi. According to figures for the first six months of 2026, more than 48.42 lakh challans were issued across the capital region. These included technology-based challans for red-light jumping and overspeeding.
At a review meeting chaired by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu in June 2026, special concern was expressed over cases of wrong-side driving and illegal parking. Up to June 25, 3.42 lakh challans had been issued for wrong-side driving, nearly 98 percent more than the corresponding period of the previous year. A total of 2,033 FIRs were also registered for this violation.
Range-wise figures showed the highest increase in wrong-side driving cases in east Delhi at 189 percent. The increase was 81.5 percent in the central range and 29 percent in the western range. Challans for illegal parking in the eastern range also rose by 103 percent.
To improve traffic management, police have carried out joint drives with civic agencies, market associations and RWAs. Between January and June, around 4,900 drives were conducted, during which about 3.9 lakh challans were issued for improper parking.
For road safety, it is necessary to follow rules, avoid wrong-side driving, wear helmets and park vehicles only at designated places.
