CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: What is a chocolate cyst? Do not ignore these symptoms if period pain is unbearable.

New Delhi. Abdominal pain and cramps during periods are common, but if the pain is so severe that it becomes difficult to carry out daily work, it should not be ignored. Such pain may be a sign of a gynaecological problem such as endometriosis. A condition linked to this disease is called a chocolate cyst.

In this condition, old blood can collect inside the ovary and form a cyst. Its colour may look like a dark brown, chocolate-like fluid, which is why it is given this name.

What is a chocolate cyst? In medical terms, a chocolate cyst is called an ovarian endometrioma. It is linked to endometriosis, in which cells similar to the inner lining of the uterus begin to grow outside the uterus. When this tissue develops on or inside the ovary, old blood can collect there and form a cyst. Most such cysts are not cancerous, but in some cases they can cause pain and problems related to fertility.

Key symptoms of a chocolate cyst: The symptoms are not the same in every woman. Some women may have no clear discomfort, while others may notice these signs:

Very severe pain or cramps during periods.

Persistent pain in the lower abdomen or back.

Pain during or after sexual intercourse.

Heavy bleeding during periods or irregular menstruation.

Pain while passing stool or urinating, especially during periods.

Difficulty in conceiving.

These symptoms are not caused only by a chocolate cyst. Other gynaecological conditions can also cause similar problems. Therefore, medical examination is necessary.

How is it diagnosed and treated? Based on symptoms and physical examination, a doctor may advise an ultrasound. In some cases, other tests may also be required. Treatment depends on the size of the cyst, the severity of pain, age and plans for pregnancy in the future. In some cases, symptoms can be controlled with medicines and regular monitoring, while in others surgery may be needed.

When should you see a doctor immediately? If there is sudden, very severe pain in the abdomen or pelvis, especially with vomiting, dizziness or fainting, seek medical help immediately. This may indicate a serious problem such as a ruptured cyst or twisting of the ovary.

It is not advisable to keep enduring unbearable period pain by considering it normal. Timely consultation with a gynaecologist can help identify the problem and ensure appropriate treatment.
