CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A wisdom tooth, or third molar, is a permanent tooth that erupts at the very back of the mouth. It usually appears between the ages of 17 and 25. In some people, it erupts normally, helps in chewing and does not cause any problem.
However, many people do not have enough space in the jaw for this tooth. In such cases, it may erupt at an angle or remain trapped inside the gum, which is called an impacted wisdom tooth. This can lead to problems such as pain, swelling or infection in the gums, food getting stuck, cavities and damage to nearby teeth.
When should it be removed? If there are repeated infections, persistent pain, tooth decay, damage to a nearby tooth, gum disease or a cyst-like problem developing, a dentist or oral surgeon may advise removal of the tooth. An X-ray may also be done to assess the position of the tooth.
Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed. If the tooth is healthy, has erupted in the right position and can be cleaned easily, it can usually be kept under observation.
