CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: When should CPR be given and when should it not? Know the correct method; timely help can save a life.

If a person suddenly becomes unconscious and is not breathing normally, it can be a serious emergency. In such a situation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), or heart-lung resuscitation, can increase the chances of saving the person’s life. CPR is an emergency procedure that helps maintain blood circulation by applying pressure to the chest. It is extremely important to start it at the right time and call emergency medical help.

When should CPR be given? If an adult suddenly collapses, does not respond when called or when gently tapped on the shoulder, and is not breathing normally or is only gasping, immediately call emergency services and begin CPR. A layperson should not waste time checking the pulse. If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available nearby, ask for it to be brought and follow its instructions.

The correct way to give CPR: Follow these steps to give CPR to an adult:

Check response: Call out to the person and gently tap the shoulder. If there is no response, call for help immediately.

Call emergency services: In India, call 112 and ask someone to bring an AED.

Give chest compressions: Lay the person on their back on a flat and firm surface. Place the heel of one hand in the centre of the chest and place the other hand on top of it. Press fast and firmly: compress an adult’s chest by about 5 to 6 centimetres. Give 100 to 120 compressions per minute and allow the chest to return to its normal position after each compression.

Continue CPR: If trained, give 2 breaths after 30 chest compressions. If not trained to give breaths, continue chest compressions without stopping for an adult. As soon as an AED is available, follow its instructions.

When should CPR not be given? If the person is conscious or breathing normally, do not give CPR by pressing on the chest. If the person is unconscious but breathing normally, monitor their breathing and seek emergency help. If there is no suspicion of injury, the person may be placed in the recovery position on their side. If normal breathing stops, begin CPR.

Remember: Do not delay giving CPR. If a person is unconscious and not breathing normally or is only gasping, calling emergency help and starting CPR immediately can be life-saving. The technique is different for children and infants, so special training for them is useful.
