Do Not Ignore White Glow Seen in a Child’s Eye

CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. A white glow or white reflection seen in a child’s eye should not be dismissed as normal. In some cases, it may be a sign of a rare eye cancer called retinoblastoma. The disease develops in the eye’s inner layer, the retina, and is seen mainly in young children.

According to doctors, the white glow may often be visible in low light or in photographs taken with a camera flash. Other possible signs can include misalignment of the child’s eye, redness or swelling in the eye, persistent watering, pain and difficulty in seeing.

Treatment-related guidelines of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also include a visible white reflection in the eye and squint as important signs of retinoblastoma. The earlier the disease is identified, the better the chances of saving eyesight and preventing the disease from spreading.

Experts advise that if a white glow is seen repeatedly in a child’s eye, especially in photographs, parents should consult an ophthalmologist without delay. During the examination, a detailed check of the back of the eye may be conducted and, if required, an ultrasound of the eye may also be done.
