CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal: While the winter season brings relief and comfort to many people, it can increase problems for those suffering from high blood pressure, or hypertension. According to health experts, the body’s blood pressure can rise in cold weather compared with normal days. The main reason is the narrowing of blood vessels due to the effect of low temperature.
In fact, to protect itself from the cold and maintain internal temperature, the body constricts the blood vessels located near the skin. This reduces the space available for blood flow, and the heart has to work harder to pump blood. As a result, blood pressure can rise. Elderly people and those already struggling with high blood pressure need to be especially careful.
In winter, reduced physical activity, higher intake of salt and fried foods, weight gain and less exposure to sunlight can also affect blood pressure. In addition, because of the cold, some people may feel a difference in the effect of medicines used to control blood pressure. Experts advise regularly checking blood pressure in winter, wearing sufficiently warm clothes and doing light exercise or walking every day. Salt intake should be limited in meals and enough water should be consumed. Do not stop or reduce blood pressure medicines without a doctor’s advice.
If blood pressure remains consistently high, or symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty in breathing, severe headache or sudden weakness appear, seek medical help immediately. With timely precautions and regular monitoring, blood pressure can be kept under control even in winter.
