CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Why has the ‘Be Ready’ campaign begun in Britain? Citizens advised to keep three days of essential supplies

London. The campaign has drawn attention in Britain after the government advised citizens to keep three days of essential supplies at home. The government has launched a new initiative called ‘Be Ready’, under which people have been urged to prepare in advance for possible emergencies. This includes drinking water, long-lasting food, essential medicines and other necessary items.

Not only storms, cyber attacks are also a cause for concern. According to the British government, essential services such as electricity, water, phones and the internet may be disrupted because of bad weather, floods, wildfires and other emergencies. A recent cyber security-related problem has also highlighted the need for citizens to be prepared for such situations. Therefore, the campaign should not be seen only as a warning linked to storms. The government has clarified that this is the initial phase of a three-year preparedness initiative. Its aim is not to spread panic, but to increase people’s ability to meet the basic needs of themselves and their families during an emergency.

According to the government’s advice, every household should have essential supplies to deal with an emergency situation. These include about three litres of drinking water per person per day for three days, non-perishable food items, medicines used regularly and a first-aid kit. In addition, torches and extra batteries for light in the dark, and blankets and warm clothes to protect against cold should also be kept. A charged power bank and a battery-operated radio may be useful for maintaining contact in emergency situations. Copies of identity cards, important documents, emergency contact numbers and some cash should also be kept safely. Taking into account the special needs of the family, milk and diapers for children and food for pets should also be included in the emergency kit, so that the family’s basic needs can be met in any unforeseen situation.

The government has advised people to prepare gradually. The British government has asked citizens to first check the items already available at home and then gather the remaining things according to their needs. Instead of making large purchases all at once, people have been advised to add items gradually during routine shopping. Emphasis has also been placed on staying in touch with neighbours and helping people in need. The government’s initiative is an attempt to prepare people in practical terms for possible crises. The purpose of keeping three days of supplies is to ensure that, if essential services are disrupted or relief is delayed, families can meet their basic needs for some time.
