CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Repeated peeling or flaking of facial skin can usually be caused by dryness, sun damage to the skin or some form of irritation. When the upper layer of the skin, the epidermis, is damaged, the body begins the process of removing old skin and forming new skin.

Spending too much time in the sun can cause sunburn, after which the skin on the face may start peeling. In addition, cold or dry air, washing the face with very hot water, and harsh soaps or skin care products can affect the skin’s natural moisture. In some people, skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, contact dermatitis or allergies can also cause peeling. Some cosmetic or medical treatments, such as retinol and chemical peels, may also lead to temporary scaling or peeling of the skin. Infections and some other illnesses can also be a cause.

If the skin is peeling, avoid pulling or picking it off, as this can increase the risk of infection. Use a fragrance-free moisturiser, avoid very hot water and apply sunscreen when in the sun. If the problem persists, or if there is pain, excessive redness, itching, sores or fever, it is better to consult a dermatologist for an examination.
