Looking at Apple product prices, many people often wonder why the starting price of an iPad can be lower than that of an iPhone despite its larger screen and bigger size. The main reason is not size alone, but the technical design, use case and market positioning of the two devices.
The iPhone is built as a device that integrates mobile network capability, an advanced camera, a high-capacity processor, security features and several technologies within a very compact body. In the current Indian market, Apple’s iPhone 17 starts at Rs 99,900, while the standard iPad starts at Rs 49,900. However, iPad prices can rise significantly depending on the model and features.
The camera system and telecommunications-related technology also play an important role in the iPhone’s pricing. A phone requires a separate communication system to remain connected to mobile networks at all times. In addition, the camera, compact battery, high-quality screen and powerful chip have to be fitted into extremely limited space. Apple’s iPhone 17 model with 256 GB storage is priced at Rs 99,900.
On the other hand, many standard iPad models are available with Wi-Fi only. Therefore, they do not require the additional hardware linked to mobile networks. However, expensive models such as the iPad Pro can cost more than an iPhone when they offer a powerful chip, higher storage and mobile network features. For example, the 13-inch iPad Pro 256 GB Wi-Fi model starts at Rs 1,39,900.
Apart from production cost, pricing is also influenced by the company’s market strategy, storage capacity, taxes, supply arrangements and component prices. In 2026, the global shortage of memory chips and rising demand from artificial intelligence-based data centres also increased cost pressure on electronic devices. Recent changes in iPhone prices in India are said to involve these factors, along with taxes and import-related costs.
Therefore, it is not correct to compare iPhone and iPad prices only on the basis of screen size. The two devices are designed for different uses, and their prices include several factors such as technical features, communication capability, camera, storage and market pricing.
