CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is once again at the centre of a political controversy over one of his statements. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reacted strongly to his remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a programme marking Dr. Shrikrishna Singh’s birth anniversary in Patna, the capital of Bihar, on October 25, 2026. Several of Kharge’s earlier statements have also sparked controversy. These include his comparison of Prime Minister Modi to a “poisonous snake”, remarks on the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and a statement concerning the people of Gujarat.

What happened in Patna? During the programme in Patna, Kharge was speaking about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list and alleged irregularities linked to it. At that point, a person in the crowd made a comment about Prime Minister Modi. In response, Kharge said, “Modi’s father, too, will go.” A political controversy began after this remark. BJP leaders described the statement as inappropriate and demanded an apology from the Congress president. Some Congress leaders, however, defended Kharge’s statement. After the incident, his earlier remarks also came back into discussion.

Timeline of Kharge’s controversial statements: April 6, 2026: BJP and RSS compared to a “poisonous snake”. At an election rally in Nilambazar in Assam’s Karimganj district, Kharge compared the BJP and RSS to a poisonous snake. Citing a religious example, he appealed to people to stop these organisations. The BJP strongly objected to this statement. April 21, 2026: Row over calling Prime Minister Modi a “terrorist”. During a press conference in Chennai, Kharge used the word “terrorist” for Prime Minister Modi.

As the controversy grew, he clarified that he meant the Prime Minister frightens people and political parties. He placed the remark in the context of his political criticism linked to equality and justice. April 5, 2026: Remark on the people of Gujarat. During an election rally in Idukki, Kerala, Kharge said the people there were educated and sensible and could not be easily misled. A controversy arose when he referred in the same sequence to people from Gujarat and other places. Critics alleged that the comment conveyed an insulting message towards the people of Gujarat.

April 27, 2023: Prime Minister Modi compared to a poisonous snake. During the Karnataka Assembly election campaign, Kharge had compared Prime Minister Modi to a poisonous snake. After the controversy, he clarified that his target was not the Prime Minister personally, but the BJP and its ideology. November 29, 2022: The “Ravan with 100 heads” remark. While addressing a rally in Ahmedabad during the Gujarat Assembly election campaign, Kharge targeted Prime Minister Modi and called him a “Ravan with 100 heads”. The BJP registered its protest over this remark.

Political confrontation intensifies over statements. The BJP has repeatedly objected to these remarks by Kharge and demanded that decorum be maintained in public discourse. On the other hand, Congress leaders have said on several occasions that his comments were made in the context of criticism of the government’s policies and political ideology. The use of sharp language in political speeches often gives rise to controversy. In such cases, it is important to view the full context of the statement, the speaker’s clarification and the reactions of different parties together.
