Many couples seeking to become parents are turning to in vitro fertilisation (IVF) these days. However, success in the first attempt is not always possible. In some cases, more than one IVF cycle may be needed for pregnancy. The reasons can include the woman’s age, the number and quality of eggs, ovarian reserve, and the number and quality of the male partner’s sperm.
According to fertility experts, the number and quality of eggs in women can be affected with increasing age. A decline in fertility is seen more commonly after the age of 35. At the same time, because of low ovarian reserve, enough eggs may not be obtained in one cycle. Sometimes, even after fertilisation of eggs, not all embryos become suitable for transfer to the uterus. In such cases, another cycle may be needed.
Failure in the first attempt does not mean that pregnancy is not possible in the future. Doctors can review the results of the previous treatment and change the dosage of medicines or the strategy for ovarian stimulation. It is also not necessary to undergo expensive tests after every failed attempt; the next step is decided according to the medical condition.
Before starting IVF, a woman should undergo hormone profile testing, AMH testing, ultrasound and, if required, examination of the uterus. Semen analysis of the male partner is also necessary. Both partners should focus on a balanced diet, fruits and vegetables, and adequate protein. Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking and alcohol are also part of better preparation. Before starting treatment, it is important to discuss the complete medical condition and the realistic chances of success with a specialist.
