CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Many people suddenly start speaking, mumbling or shouting a few words while asleep. This condition is called sleep talking, or somniloquy. It is a common sleep-related condition, and the person often does not even remember in the morning that they said anything during the night. According to research, many people may experience it at some point in their lives.

According to experts, there is no single fixed cause behind it. Stress, lack of adequate sleep, changes in sleep patterns and some other parasomnias may be associated with it. However, sleep talking alone cannot be taken as evidence that a person is suffering from a mental illness. In most cases, it is not harmful.

But if mumbling is accompanied by shouting, vigorous movement of the arms and legs, hitting, or acting out dreams as if they were real, it may be necessary to consult a doctor. Such behaviour can be seen in REM sleep behaviour disorder. In some cases, it may be linked to neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Lewy body dementia or multiple system atrophy.

If sleep talking is happening continuously, sleep is being disturbed, there is excessive daytime sleepiness, or there is a risk of injury to oneself or someone else while asleep, it is advisable to get examined by a sleep specialist or doctor. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule, getting enough sleep and reducing stress before bedtime may also help.
