CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. As dengue cases rise in several parts of the country, patients and families remain concerned about platelet counts. During dengue infection, platelet numbers fall in some patients, but this does not necessarily happen in every case. According to experts, a low platelet count alone should not be considered the only sign of the severity of the illness.
Doctors say the dengue virus can affect platelets. The body’s immune response and the process of platelet production in the bone marrow may also be temporarily affected. This is why platelet counts can fall during the illness. In dengue, this decline is often seen after the initial days of the disease.
There is no specific medicine to raise platelet counts immediately. As the body recovers from the infection, platelets generally begin to rise again. Taking adequate fluids, resting and remaining under medical supervision are important. Papaya leaf juice, goat’s milk or other home remedies are not considered proven treatments for increasing platelets.
Not every patient with a low platelet count needs a platelet transfusion. Doctors decide after assessing the platelet count along with the patient’s overall condition, bleeding and other test results. If warning signs such as active bleeding, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or bleeding from the gums or nose appear, medical help should be sought immediately at a hospital.
