CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Pilibhit. Panic spread late Wednesday night in Puranpur town of Pilibhit district in Uttar Pradesh after a wild elephant entered a residential area. The elephant reached Har Narayanpuram Colony via Kotwali Road and then went into a nearby cemetery, where it broke a wall. A large number of people gathered to see the elephant. Some people were seen following it with sticks in their hands and by the light of mobile phones.

According to eyewitnesses, there was commotion after the elephant suddenly appeared on the road at night. The news soon spread to nearby areas. The elephant was seen at times on the main road and at times in lanes and residential colonies. People came out of their homes to see it and make videos, causing the crowd at the spot to keep growing and making it a challenge to guide the elephant out safely.

After information about the incident, police reached the spot and took charge of security arrangements. The Forest Department was also informed about the elephant’s presence. According to officials, the elephant’s movements were being monitored and efforts were being made to send it safely towards the forest. The elephant roamed different parts of the town for about two hours.

Running after a wild elephant to see it, showing sticks or going close to record videos on mobile phones can be dangerous. If surrounded or if it senses danger, an elephant can suddenly turn aggressive. In such a situation, people should keep a distance, move to a safe place and inform the police or the Forest Department. Movement of wild elephants in Pilibhit and nearby areas has remained a matter of concern earlier as well. The Forest Department now faces the challenge of preventing elephants from entering populated areas and ensuring people’s safety.
