CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Will Pakistan join the war against the Houthis? Questions have been raised over Sharif and Munir seeking help from Saudi Arabia.

Discussion has intensified in regional politics over defence cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Amid growing closeness between Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir with Saudi Arabia, questions are being raised over whether Pakistan will join any military action against Yemen’s Houthi rebels or whether its objective is to secure economic and defence assistance from Saudi Arabia.

Pakistan’s economic situation has remained under pressure for a long time, and it has continued to receive financial assistance, investment and oil-related facilities from Saudi Arabia. In this context, defence cooperation between the two countries is being viewed in relation to regional security and economic interests in the Islamic world.

However, a defence agreement with Saudi Arabia does not mean that Pakistan will necessarily have to enter a war against the Houthi rebels. Any decision on participation in military action will depend on the relevant agreements, regional circumstances and the policy of the Pakistan government.

What questions did a Pakistani journalist raise? Critics have questioned Pakistan’s military deployment and economic cooperation with Saudi Arabia. However, available reports do not independently confirm the specific claim by any Pakistani journalist that Sharif and Munir only want to secure economic assistance. Pakistan has officially reiterated its commitment to Saudi Arabia’s security and has said it gives priority to dialogue and diplomacy for regional peace.
