Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi: A case of cyber fraud has come to light in Latkonikala village under the Pendra police station area of the district. Unknown cyber criminals allegedly hacked a woman’s mobile phone and withdrew about Rs 1.70 lakh from her bank account. Instead of withdrawing the amount in one go, the fraudsters transferred it to different UPI accounts through three separate transactions.
When the woman came to know that money had been withdrawn from her account, she was shocked. After gathering details of the bank account, it was found that a large amount had been sent from her account to other UPI accounts in three transactions. The victim then lodged a complaint at the police station concerned.
According to preliminary information, the fraud involved unauthorised access to the mobile phone and misuse of the digital payment system. However, detailed information on how the mobile phone was hacked and to which accounts the money was sent will emerge only after the investigation.
Police are collecting details of the transactions linked to the cyber fraud and the suspicious UPI accounts and are investigating the case. After the incident, the need to remain alert about mobile and digital payment security has once again come to the fore. People should avoid clicking on unknown links, downloading suspicious apps and sharing OTPs or confidential banking information. In case of cyber fraud, a complaint should be lodged immediately with the bank and the national cyber helpline number 1930.
