New Delhi. The Central government is running the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) with the aim of providing financial assistance to women during pregnancy and after childbirth. Under this scheme of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, eligible women are given financial assistance of Rs 5,000 on the birth of the first living child and Rs 6,000 if the second child is a girl. The amount is sent directly to the beneficiary’s bank or post office account.

The objective of the scheme is to provide financial support to pregnant women for nutrition, health care, and rest before and after delivery.

Rs 5,000 for the first child in two instalments

For the first child, an eligible woman receives total assistance of Rs 5,000 in two instalments. The first instalment of Rs 3,000 is given after completion of conditions related to registration of pregnancy and prescribed antenatal health check-ups. The second instalment of Rs 2,000 is provided after registration of the child’s birth and completion of the prescribed vaccination cycle after birth.

Rs 6,000 on the birth of a second daughter

If the second child is a girl, the eligible woman is given a lump sum amount of Rs 6,000. For this, it is necessary to fulfil conditions related to pregnancy registration, prescribed health check-ups and required vaccination after the birth of the child. Eligible women may also be entitled, as per rules, to assistance under the Janani Suraksha Yojana in case of institutional delivery.
