CNN Central News and Network–ITDC India ePress / ITDC News Bhopal:  The World Antibiotic Awareness Week is being observed until November 24 to promote the rational use of antibiotics. This year’s theme, “Antimicrobials: Handle with Care,” emphasizes the need for awareness about the proper use of antibiotics. Various activities are being conducted during the week to educate the public on the rational use of antibiotics.

What is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)?
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve over time, rendering medicines ineffective against them. As a result, antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents lose their effectiveness, making infections harder or impossible to treat. This increases the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death.

In May 2015, the 68th World Health Assembly developed a global action plan to address the growing problem of resistance to antibiotics and other antimicrobials. A key objective of this plan is to improve awareness and understanding of AMR through effective communication.

Activities During Awareness Week
Healthcare professionals are being oriented to prescribe antibiotics following the State Antibiotic Policy and Standard Treatment Guidelines. To ensure effective and quality services, the state government has implemented an antibiotic policy, and its impact is becoming evident.

Dr. Prabhakar Tiwari, Chief Medical and Health Officer of Bhopal, advised that no medication, especially antibiotics, should ever be taken without consulting a doctor. During the awareness week, OPD prescription audits are being conducted at healthcare institutions. The public is being educated about the benefits of antibiotics and the potential harm caused by taking them without medical advice.

This initiative is a step towards reducing antibiotic misuse and addressing the critical issue of AMR for better public health outcomes.
