CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit India to attend the BRICS summit scheduled for September 12-13. It will be his visit to India after nearly seven years. A bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping is also likely on the sidelines of the summit. Border issues, trade and economic relations are expected to be key points of discussion in the meeting between the two leaders.
For India, the biggest benefit of improved relations with China could be on the trade and investment front. Trade between the two countries has reached record levels in recent years, while some restrictions on investment and business activity have also been gradually eased. However, India continues to maintain a cautious approach in technology, investment and strategic sectors.
On the BRICS platform, India is pushing issues such as digital payments, trade in local currencies and alternative payment arrangements. The initiative to link UPI with cross-border payments among BRICS countries could become a major economic opportunity for India. It could help reduce the cost of international payments and support the global expansion of India’s digital payment system.
In addition, India is also stressing the need to strengthen the voice of the Global South and increase cooperation in energy, food security and critical supply chains. However, due to the lack of trust with China and the border dispute, expectations of any major agreement are currently being viewed with caution.
