CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: CNN Central News and Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies: Young participants presented their views and arguments in a discussion held on the benefits and challenges of the concept of “One Nation, One Election.” The participants shared different perspectives on the possible impact of this system, discussing aspects related to the electoral process, administrative arrangements, democratic participation and the country’s development.

During the discussion, the side supporting the proposal said that holding Lok Sabha and Assembly elections together could reduce recurring election expenditure. It could also reduce the pressure on employees and security forces deployed on election duty. They also said the possible impact on development work and government schemes caused by the repeated enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct could be limited.

Opposing the idea, young participants highlighted the country’s federal structure, the differing political circumstances of states and the importance of regional issues. They argued that simultaneous elections would require extensive changes at the constitutional and administrative levels. In addition, if a state Assembly is dissolved before time or a government is unable to complete its term, creating a mechanism to deal with such a situation would also be a major challenge. The participants said that democratic values, states’ rights and voter participation must be kept in mind while taking any decision on electoral reform. The discussion gave participants an opportunity to understand different aspects of the issue and present their points logically.
