CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed to India, China and Türkiye to stop energy trade with Russia. In a media interview in New York during the United Nations General Assembly, he said Russia’s economy depends heavily on energy sales and that if these countries stop buying Russian energy, it could become difficult for Moscow to continue the war.
Zelensky said Russia is basing its economy on energy trade with India, China and, to some extent, Türkiye. According to him, if these countries halt purchases of Russian energy, economic pressure on Russia could increase. He also referred to the possibility of the United States, India and China working together to put pressure on Russia.
Zelensky’s appeal comes at a time when diplomatic efforts are also continuing from the United States to end the Russia-Ukraine war. During his meeting with US President Donald Trump in New York, he discussed ending the war and reducing conflict in the energy sector. Zelensky has also spoken about a mutual “energy ceasefire” with Russia.
On the issue of India buying Russian oil, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has earlier said that stopping oil purchases from Russia does not in itself guarantee an end to the war. India has continued to buy oil from various countries, including Russia, based on its energy requirements and national interests.
