CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Regional Science Centre, Bhopal celebrated Zero Shadow Day on its premises. Zero Shadow Day is a rare astronomical phenomenon—similar in rarity to a solar or lunar eclipse—during which the Sun is positioned exactly overhead at noon, resulting in no shadows being cast on the ground by any object. For Bhopal (Latitude: 23.25° N), this day provided the opportunity to witness such an event.
As part of the programme, a demonstration kit was used to explain the apparent motion of the Sun north or south of the equator. This helped the audience accurately understand astronomical events such as equinox, solstice, and Zero Shadow Day.
In addition, the continuous measurement of the shadow length of a vertical pole on graph paper was carried out to demonstrate how an object’s shadow length changes over time, and to precisely determine the point of zero shadow. Shadows of various geometric objects projected by the Sun on the ground were also closely observed to detect the position of minimum shadow.
Around 60 students, teachers, parents, homemakers, and members of the general public from various schools participated in the event and witnessed this rare celestial phenomenon.
