CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Zero Shadow Day 2026 was observed at the Regional Science Centre, Bhopal, with enthusiasm and public participation. A large number of students, teachers, science enthusiasts and citizens took part in the programme, directly witnessed this rare astronomical phenomenon and understood the scientific principles behind it.

During the programme, participants were introduced to the scientific background of Zero Shadow Day. Experts explained that on certain special days of the year, the Sun reaches such a position in the sky, or zenith, that the shadow of a vertical object appears almost directly beneath it or nearly disappears. The reasons behind this phenomenon were explained in a simple and engaging manner through various experiments and demonstrations.

The main attraction of the programme was the human chain and circular group activities, in which participants stood in place and observed their own shadows. Participants experienced that, compared to normal days, the shape and direction of their shadows appeared completely different on this day, and the shadows became extremely short, almost shrinking beneath their feet. This direct experience gave participants a better understanding of the Sun’s position, the Earth’s axial tilt and the effect of latitude.

As part of the programme, a live demonstration of zero shadow formation using different objects was also conducted. Participants observed the shadows of various vertical objects and understood the difference between the shadows formed on normal days and those seen during Zero Shadow Day. On this occasion, special observation of the Sun and sunspots was also arranged through telescopes fitted with safe solar filters. Participants observed the sunspots visible on the Sun’s surface and learned about their scientific significance.

Participants present during the programme described the direct experience of this unique astronomical event as highly interesting and informative. The objective of the programme was to develop public interest in astronomy, promote a scientific outlook and explain, through practical experience, the scientific principles behind astronomical events occurring in nature.

Such programmes organised by the Regional Science Centre, Bhopal, play an important role in taking science to different sections of society through direct experiences and in strengthening the scientific temper.
