CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal: After air pollution levels in Delhi-NCR reached the severe category, many people are asking whether it is safe to step out for a morning or evening walk. According to doctors, when the Air Quality Index (AQI) crosses 400, long walks, running and intense exercise in the open should be avoided. During this period, fine particles from polluted air can enter the lungs in larger quantities through breathing, increasing health-related problems.
According to Dr Ankit Bhatia of the Respiratory Medicine Department at Yashoda Medicity, spending too much time walking outdoors during extreme pollution can be harmful to the lungs. The impact of pollution can remain both in the morning and evening. In such conditions, walking indoors or doing light exercise at home is a better option.
Children, the elderly and people suffering from respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD should take special precautions. Heart patients should also avoid polluted air. High pollution levels can worsen problems such as cough, breathlessness, chest tightness and irritation in the eyes.
If going outside for essential work is unavoidable, wear a well-fitting N95 respirator mask. Do not rely on cloth masks or loose surgical masks. Keep away from busy roads, construction sites and areas with dust and smoke. To reduce indoor pollution, keep windows closed and use an air purifier if available. Health experts advise continuing physical activity indoors instead of regular outdoor walks when pollution levels are severe. Consult a doctor if there is difficulty in breathing, chest pain or persistent cough.
