CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Breathlessness after exercise: a normal response or a warning sign? Doctor explains the indicators
Faster breathing during exercise is common. When physical activity increases, the body needs more oxygen, so the heart rate and breathing rate rise. But if breathlessness continues long after the workout has ended, or if breathing difficulty begins during routine activities, it should not be ignored.
How long should breathing take to return to normal? According to pulmonology specialist Dr Bhagwan Mantri, after a light walk or easy exercise, breathing may return to normal in about 3 minutes. After strenuous exercise such as running, heavy workouts or weightlifting, the body may take 5 to 10 minutes to recover. In some cases, this time may extend to around 12 minutes. If breathlessness continues even after that, it is important to consult a doctor.
These conditions may cause problems. Asthma: Exercise can narrow the airways in some people. This may cause symptoms such as breathlessness, cough, chest tightness and wheezing. This is called exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Heart-related problems: If breathlessness begins after even mild exertion, or if breathing does not return to normal long after exercise, it may be a sign of a heart-related problem. Medical help should be sought immediately, especially if breathlessness is accompanied by chest pain or pressure. Lung disease: In lung-related conditions too, breathing may take longer to return to normal after physical activity. Persistent or worsening breathing problems should be investigated.
When should one go to hospital immediately? If breathlessness is accompanied by chest pain or tightness, dizziness, fainting, bluish lips or nails, or sudden severe difficulty in breathing, it may be considered a medical emergency and immediate medical assistance should be taken. Therefore, there is no need to panic only because breathing becomes faster during exercise. But if the pattern of breathlessness has suddenly changed, the problem is steadily increasing, or it has started occurring even during normal activities, it is better to get examined by a doctor to identify the cause.
