CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. A rapid heartbeat, breathlessness and sweating while working out at the gym or running can be normal physical changes during exercise. However, for some people, these symptoms trigger a persistent fear that they are about to suffer a heart attack. This kind of constant and intense fear is called cardiophobia.
According to cardiac surgeon Dr Naresh Trehan, an increased heart rate during exercise is not in itself a sign of a heart attack. It is important to continue regular physical activity with the right information and medical advice. However, people who already have heart-related disease should consult a doctor before deciding the intensity of their exercise.
In cardiophobia, a person may repeatedly check their heartbeat and interpret even normal bodily sensations as signs of a serious heart problem. This can increase anxiety and panic, and the person may begin avoiding exercise.
In such cases, cognitive behavioural therapy and psychotherapy, along with medical evaluation, can be helpful. If there is chest pressure or pain during exercise, fainting, unusual breathlessness or persistent severe symptoms, these should not be dismissed as mere fear, and immediate medical help should be sought.
