CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Coffee may affect these medicines; keep a gap, doctors advise

Morning coffee is part of the daily routine for many people, but the timing of coffee with certain medicines can be important. The caffeine present in coffee can interact with some medicines and affect their impact or their absorption in the body. Therefore, while taking medicines, it is important to maintain a time gap as advised by a doctor or pharmacist. (fda.gov)

Thyroid medicine: Patients taking levothyroxine should be especially careful. Coffee can affect the absorption of this medicine. Generally, levothyroxine is advised to be taken on an empty stomach with water, followed by avoiding coffee or food for some time. Decide the timing according to your doctor’s instructions. Some stimulant medicines: Caffeine itself is a stimulant. Taking it with such medicines may increase effects such as a faster heartbeat, restlessness or a rise in blood pressure in some people. Caution is especially necessary with epinephrine or some other stimulant medicines. (mayoclinic.org)

The amount of coffee is also important. According to the FDA, up to about 400 milligrams of caffeine a day is generally not considered to be associated with negative effects in most healthy adults, but this limit may vary depending on individual sensitivity and medicines. (fda.gov)

Therefore, before taking any medicine with coffee or immediately after it, read its instructions. If you take medicines regularly, be sure to tell your doctor or pharmacist about your coffee habit.
