CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: Air pollution in Delhi is once again moving towards a severe situation. Ahead of Diwali, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in several areas of the capital has crossed 400. On Monday, November 2, Delhi’s average AQI was recorded at 324 by evening, which falls in the very poor category. In Rohini, the AQI reached 405, placing the air in the severe category.

According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, apart from Rohini, the AQI was recorded at 375 in Alipur, 370 in Vivek Vihar, 363 in Narela and 358 in Chandni Chowk. It stood at 349 in Akshardham and ITO, 343 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and 335 in the India Gate-Janpath area. Anand Vihar recorded a comparatively lower, but still poor-category, AQI of 242.

Amid the rise in pollution, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) implemented the second stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR on November 2. Under this, measures including mechanical cleaning of roads, water sprinkling, monitoring at construction sites and controls in polluted areas have been intensified.

Inspection drives are also being carried out at Delhi’s borders to curb vehicular pollution. The traffic police have stepped up action to send back vehicles coming from other states that do not comply with prescribed standards and to act against those violating rules.

According to experts, prolonged exposure to pollution at this level can cause breathing difficulties. Children, the elderly and people suffering from heart or lung-related diseases have been advised to take special precautions.
