In view of the continuously worsening air quality in Delhi, the Directorate of Education has taken an important decision regarding the studies of young children. In all government and private schools in the capital, teaching up to Class 5 will now be conducted in hybrid mode. Under this arrangement, students will have the option of attending offline classes at school as well as joining online classes from home.

The Directorate of Education issued the directive on November 6, and it will remain in force with immediate effect until further orders. The arrangement will apply to government, government-aided and recognised private schools under the Directorate of Education, as well as schools run by the MCD, NDMC and Delhi Cantonment. Schools have been instructed to immediately inform parents and guardians about the arrangement.

Decision after GRAP-3 imposed

The step has been taken after the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) imposed restrictions under the third stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR. GRAP-3 was implemented on November 6 for pollution control. Following this, the hybrid study arrangement has been introduced with the aim of protecting young children from exposure to pollution.

On November 7, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 364, which falls in the very poor category. The Directorate of Education has also asked district- and zone-level officials to inspect schools and ensure compliance with the order.

Schools not closed, online study an option

It is important for parents to understand that the government has not ordered the complete closure of schools. Students up to Class 5 may attend school in person, or, where online facilities are available, join classes from home. This arrangement will continue until further orders.
