New Delhi: Ahead of Diwali, the air pollution situation in Delhi-NCR is steadily worsening. Weather and air quality forecasts have heightened concern. From Dhanteras on November 6, the capital’s air is feared to enter the severe category. It is estimated that relief from pollution may remain difficult for the next several days. In such a situation, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) may impose restrictions under the third stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

The second stage of GRAP is currently in force in Delhi. Under this, measures such as mechanised road cleaning, water sprinkling, dust control at construction sites and monitoring of polluting activities are being carried out. Despite this, the expected improvement in air quality has not been seen.

According to forecasts by the India Meteorological Department and IITM Pune’s Early Warning System, Delhi’s air may reach the severe category on November 6 and 7. Severe pollution has also been forecast for the following six days. At 8 am on November 5, Delhi’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 370, which falls in the very poor category. At several monitoring stations, the AQI has crossed 400. In Jahangirpuri, it was recorded at 459.

Under the third stage of GRAP, wide-ranging restrictions may be imposed on construction and demolition-related activities. In addition, stricter action may be taken on vehicle movement and other sources of pollution.

However, no official order has so far been issued to implement GRAP-3. The decision will be taken by CAQM after reviewing the air quality forecast and weather conditions. Experts have advised citizens, especially children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems, to avoid exposure to pollution.
