CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Liver damage can occur without stomach pain; do not ignore these symptoms

The liver is one of the most important organs in the body. It helps digest food, process nutrients, store energy and remove harmful substances from the body. People usually associate liver disease with stomach pain, but according to experts, liver trouble does not always necessarily cause abdominal pain. Especially in the early stages of fatty liver, many people do not feel any clear symptoms.

Signs may appear in other parts of the body. In some liver-related diseases, changes can also be seen in other parts of the body. Symptoms such as persistent fatigue, weakness and reduced ability to work may appear. However, these signs can have many other causes as well. As liver disease progresses, some people may develop problems such as yellowing of the eyes and skin, swelling in the feet or ankles, fluid accumulation in the abdomen and itching of the skin. Easy bruising or bleeding can also be a sign of a serious liver problem. These symptoms cannot be considered proof of fatty liver alone, but they should not be ignored.

Who is at higher risk of fatty liver? In fatty liver, excess fat begins to accumulate in liver cells. Obesity, type-2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and lack of physical activity are factors linked to its risk. Alcohol consumption can also damage the liver. Over time, some patients may develop liver inflammation and scarring, or fibrosis. In serious cases, this can lead to a disease such as cirrhosis. However, not every fatty liver patient’s illness reaches this level.

What should be done to keep the liver healthy? Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, keep weight under control and limit the intake of sugary drinks and highly processed foods. Avoiding alcohol is important for liver health. Do not use medicines or herbal supplements without a doctor’s advice.

If symptoms such as persistent fatigue, jaundice, swelling or abnormal abdominal enlargement appear, consult a doctor. People at risk should undergo blood tests and, if needed, an ultrasound as advised by a medical professional. Liver disease cannot be detected from symptoms alone; proper tests and medical evaluation are necessary.
