CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Back pain has become a common problem today. Working for long hours while seated, sitting in the wrong posture, lack of physical activity and excessive strain on muscles can be among its main causes. However, if back pain continues for several days, occurs repeatedly or increases over time, it should not be ignored as normal fatigue. Persistent pain can also be a sign of another health problem in the body.
Back pain may be linked to problems such as muscle strain, changes in the spine, a slipped disc or pressure on nerves. In some cases, arthritis, osteoporosis and other spine-related diseases can also be the cause. If there is pain on one side of the lower back, it may sometimes be necessary to check for problems such as kidney stones or infection. No disease can be confirmed on the basis of pain alone; medical examination is necessary for this.
Special attention should be paid to certain symptoms. If back pain is accompanied by tingling in the legs, numbness, weakness or pain spreading down to the leg, consult a doctor. Weight loss without any clear reason, fever or pain worsening at night may also indicate the need for medical examination. If there is sudden severe weakness in the legs, numbness in the area between the thighs, or difficulty controlling urination or bowel movements, seek emergency medical help immediately.
Doctors advise preventive measures to reduce the risk of back pain. Keep the spine straight while sitting and do not remain in the same position for long periods. Get up and walk at regular intervals and do light stretching. Regular exercise helps keep the back and abdominal muscles strong. While lifting heavy objects, bend the knees instead of bending the waist and keep the object close to the body. Get adequate sleep and use a comfortable mattress for sleeping.
If the pain does not reduce in a few days, returns repeatedly or affects daily activities, it is important to seek medical advice. Treatment depends on the actual cause of the pain. Avoid taking painkillers for a long time without a doctor’s advice.
