CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Will eating poha raise blood sugar? AIIMS doctor explains how much to eat in diabetes
New Delhi. People with diabetes often have several questions about what they should eat for breakfast. There is a common belief, especially about poha, that because it is made from rice, eating it may rapidly raise blood sugar.
According to Dr. Rajesh Khadgawat, professor in the Department of Endocrinology at Delhi AIIMS, it is not necessary to completely give up poha if a person has diabetes. Poha is a carbohydrate-based food, so it is important to pay attention to the quantity consumed.
According to the doctor, eating poha in a small or limited quantity and eating a large plate of poha do not have the same effect on the body. Therefore, diabetes patients should eat poha in limited quantities and avoid eating it repeatedly during the day.
While preparing poha, adding green vegetables and peanuts can be a better option. This increases the nutrients and fibre in the meal. At the same time, taking sweet tea, biscuits or soft drinks with poha can increase the amount of added sugar and carbohydrates.
AIIMS Jodhpur’s diabetes diet plan also includes vegetable poha among breakfast options, although the quantity in a diet is decided according to a person’s calorie and medical needs.
Therefore, poha is not a completely prohibited food in diabetes. The key factors are quantity, the method of preparation and the foods taken along with it. For blood sugar control, it is advisable to decide individual dietary portions according to the advice of a doctor or dietitian.
