Pollution may raise diabetes risk; staying indoors can also harm

CNN Central News and Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal:

The impact of air pollution is no longer considered limited only to the lungs and respiratory illnesses. According to experts, extremely fine PM2.5 particles present in the air can also affect the body’s metabolism and blood sugar control. Long-term exposure to polluted air may increase the risk of type-2 diabetes. At the same time, staying indoors continuously to avoid pollution and reducing physical activity can also make blood sugar control difficult.

According to Dr Rajesh Khadgawat, professor in the endocrinology department at AIIMS Delhi, pollution does not directly cause diabetes in every person, but lifestyle changes triggered by it can increase the risk. During days of high pollution, people stop morning walks and exercise. This reduces calorie expenditure, raises the possibility of weight gain and may affect the body’s sensitivity to insulin. The habit of eating snacks repeatedly while spending more time at home can also affect weight and sugar levels.

How does PM2.5 affect blood sugar?

An Indian study conducted on 12,064 people in Delhi and Chennai found a link between long-term exposure to PM2.5 and type-2 diabetes. According to the study, for every 10 micrograms per cubic metre increase in annual average PM2.5, the risk of type-2 diabetes was found to be about 22 percent higher. Pollution can also raise the likelihood of inflammation and oxidative stress in the body, which may affect insulin’s ability to function.

Stay active even while indoors

Experts advise avoiding outdoor exercise when pollution levels are high, but say physical activity should not be stopped completely. Yoga, light exercise and walking can be done inside the home. A balanced diet, regular routine and weight control are also important. People dealing with diabetes or prediabetes should get their blood sugar checked regularly as advised by their doctor.
