CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Mumbling while asleep, or talking in sleep, is a common problem that can be experienced by children as well as adults. Many people utter unclear words during sleep, while some begin having full conversations. It is generally not considered a serious problem, but if it starts happening repeatedly or is accompanied by other symptoms, it should not be ignored.
According to experts, the condition of talking in sleep is medically known as “somniloquy”. It can occur during different stages of sleep. Stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, an irregular routine, fever and extreme fatigue may be among the reasons behind it. In some cases, family history may also be a factor.
Occasional mumbling in sleep is usually not a cause for concern. However, if a person starts shouting in sleep, wakes up frightened, moves the hands and legs rapidly, or shows unusual behaviour during sleep, medical advice is necessary. In some situations, it may also appear along with other sleep-related disorders. In addition, if a person feels excessively sleepy during the day or wakes up repeatedly at night, the condition should be examined.
Adopt good habits for prevention. To reduce the problem of talking in sleep, it may help to sleep and wake up at regular times, get adequate sleep, reduce stress before bedtime and avoid caffeine and alcohol. Reducing the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices before sleeping also supports better sleep.
If the problem continues, begins suddenly, or appears with other unusual symptoms, consult a doctor. Identifying the correct cause and timely examination can help provide proper solutions for possible sleep-related problems.
