CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon has begun in the country. According to the India Meteorological Department, the monsoon started withdrawing from some parts of western Rajasthan on September 19. This is around the normal time. The monsoon withdrawal line has reached Ramgarh, Mohangarh, Phalodi and Khajuwala in Rajasthan. However, despite the start of the monsoon’s retreat, a rainfall deficit persists across large parts of the country. As of September 19, about 43 percent of the geographical area was included among rainfall-deficient regions. Across the country, rainfall between June 1 and September 19 was about 15 percent below normal.
According to Meteorological Department data, the rainfall deficit was higher in some states. The deficit was recorded at 59 percent in Meghalaya, 43 percent in Andhra Pradesh, 41 percent in Arunachal Pradesh and 36 percent in Bihar. Rainfall in the country was slightly above normal during July, but deficits were recorded in June, August and September. Amid the monsoon withdrawal, rainfall is likely to continue in some parts of eastern and central India due to a weather system over the Bay of Bengal. This may bring rain to Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and nearby areas in the coming days. In such a situation, the monsoon withdrawal is likely to move ahead in a phased manner.
