CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal: In today’s fast-paced life, stress and lack of sleep have become common problems. But for people who have epilepsy, these conditions can increase difficulties. According to medical experts, excessive mental stress and not getting adequate sleep can trigger epilepsy seizures in some patients. However, these factors do not cause epilepsy on their own, but can increase the likelihood of seizures in people who are already susceptible.
According to experts, the brain’s electrical activity changes during sleep. When a person consistently sleeps less or does not get complete sleep, the balance of brain activity can be affected. This increases the possibility of seizures in some people suffering from epilepsy. Similarly, prolonged stress can affect stress-related hormones and the sleep cycle in the body, which can lead to seizures.
The causes and triggers of seizures can differ from patient to patient. One person may have trouble due to stress, while in another, lack of sleep or missing a dose of medicine may be the main reason.
Doctors advise epilepsy patients to sleep at a regular time, get adequate sleep, and adopt yoga, meditation and light exercise to reduce stress. It is also extremely important to take medicines prescribed by the doctor on time. Stopping medicine or changing its dosage without medical advice can be dangerous. Keeping a record of when and under what circumstances seizures occur helps in identifying possible causes.
If a person has a seizure for the first time, if a seizure lasts more than five minutes, or if repeated seizures occur and consciousness does not return in between, emergency medical help should be sought immediately.
