CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Diet plays an important role in keeping the heart healthy. For people who eat fish, some varieties can be useful because they contain omega-3 fatty acids. This nutrient may help reduce triglyceride levels in the blood and maintain normal heart function. According to the American Heart Association, eating fish at least twice a week can be part of a heart-healthy diet.

Sardines, mackerel and salmon are considered good sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Sardines also contain protein and other essential nutrients along with omega-3. Cooking them in less oil or grilling them can be a better option. Mackerel is also called bangda in many regions of India. It is among fatty fish, and the omega-3 fatty acids it contains may help maintain heart health. Salmon is also a good source of omega-3 and can be included in a balanced diet. Eating these fish boiled, baked or grilled is a better option than deep-frying them. However, the amount of nutrients may vary according to the fish species.

Omega-3 fatty acids are important for heart health. They may help reduce triglyceride levels in the blood. Including fish in a balanced diet has been linked to better cardiovascular health, but eating any one fish alone does not guarantee protection from a heart attack. The American Heart Association advises eating fish at least twice a week. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts should also be included in the diet. It is better to cook fish with less salt and less oil. Those who do not eat fish can include plant-based sources of omega-3, such as flaxseed and walnuts, in their diet. Relying only on diet is not enough to keep the heart healthy. Regular exercise, staying away from smoking, and monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol are also important. Consult a doctor before starting fish oil supplements.
