CNN Central News and Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal: Many people remain troubled by being underweight despite eating enough food. Genetic factors, a fast metabolism, inadequate calorie intake, digestive problems or certain health conditions may be responsible for low body weight. In such cases, simply eating more is not enough; it is important to include nutritious and energy-rich foods in the diet.

According to nutrition experts, taking slightly more calories than the body’s daily requirement can be beneficial for gaining weight in a healthy way. For this, include milk, curd, paneer, eggs, pulses, soybeans and other protein-rich foods in meals. Almonds, walnuts, peanuts, cashews and seeds provide healthy fats and calories. Fruits such as bananas, mangoes, dates and raisins can also help increase energy.

Include carbohydrate-rich foods such as rice, roti, porridge, oats and potatoes in the diet. Along with three main meals a day, taking two to three nutritious snacks may also be useful. In addition, regular strength training, or exercises that strengthen muscles, helps in gaining weight. However, there is no guarantee of gaining five kilos in one month. Instead of gaining weight very quickly, it is better to gain weight gradually and in a healthy manner. If weight is falling without any clear reason or if the problem of being underweight has persisted for a long time, consult a doctor for a check-up.
